Sort of like your car’s miles per gallon ratio, the higher your HVAC unit’s SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is, the more efficiently it operates. The minimum SEER in the United States is between 13 and 14, but half of the HVAC systems in the country are actually operating at SEER levels around 8 or 10 due to installation problems and inefficiencies.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, half of the HVAC systems in the country have not been installed in compliance with the manufacturer’s installation standards. Ensuring that your HVAC unit is installed properly can save 30-40% of the energy needed to heat or cool your home. Choosing the right HVAC unit is also extremely important. An oversized HVAC unit will cool your home down too quickly and turn off without taking care of the humidity in the room, leaving you still feeling hot even though the air conditioner is on. So what is the optimal setting for your thermostat? The Air Conditioning Contractors of America recommends cooling your house to 75°F in the summer and heating it to 68°F in the winter for optimal energy efficiency.
